The Childhood Trust

London Scholars is proud to partner with the Childhood Trust, and to support the amazing work they do for children living in poverty in London. The charity works to support thousands of children without basic requirements, such as enough food to eat, a bedroom to sleep in, and the nurture and support necessary for an education.

The issues the charity faces today are similar to those I faced as a young teacher starting in an inner-city comprehensive school in the mid 90’s. I encountered hungry children on a daily basis, coming to school without having eaten breakfast, teenage pregnancies, and children at risk of grooming and sexual exploitation, many in a cycle of extreme poverty.

At the tender age of 22, I was horrified to find there were so many children living in poverty under my care.  I did what anyone would have in my position, I gave them breakfast and helped them as best I could with personal and educational problems.

Meeting the team at The Childhood Trust rekindled that feeling of helplessness that I felt in my early twenties and the despair of how, in this day and age, so many children could still have so little. I was mortified to hear there are more children than ever living below the poverty line in London.
